Portland, Inc. is a feature length documentary about a small west coast city, surprised by sudden growth and change. In the early 60’s, Portland found its sleepy self in the thoughtful hands of brilliant renegades who thought differently about politics, planning, work and lifestyle.

The difference between what we have today and what was intended lies within the concept of livability. During the era of the Downtown Plan, our city was designed with attention given to what it meant to live first and work second. Now that the Portland lifestyle has transformed into a brand, it has become a hot commodity; a consumable good on the brink of becoming a place where livability is being squeezed from its original intention.

Portland is often compared to its northern and southern neighbors, Seattle and San Francisco. Neighborhoods in Portland are being flipped and its people pushed out. Now the fastest growing city by comparison, will Portland be forced to disown its roots as it rapidly changes to meet the needs of growth?

Portland, Inc. explores the charm of the past to extract what worked in an effort to reinvent the future of our renowned livable city. While we take stock at what's happening to our community now, we hope to answer: Is the future that's being designed for us good enough?

The highly intelligent (and quite stunning) Erika Ellis suggests a better version of reflection on change. If we could think & communicate this way to begin with, we'd likely not leave out those voices and people that make our communities much more interesting. "One of the things that is most interesting to me about Portland and Oregon is that there is a deep belief that we live in the best place on earth. There are no aspirations for us to be like other cities, we are the city." Portland Historian, Chet Orloff has played an integral role in the development of Portland, Inc. He has shown us how studying the past is invaluable to understanding the future. He was a huge part of the visionary efforts during the 1972 Downtown Plan and we've been lucky to have him along on this journey from concept to script development and through production. Thanks Chet for your assistance and enthusiasm, this film will indeed be a crowning jewel for our city. #Portlandinc #portlandnw #Portland #pdxavsquad #oregonfilm #ompamember #documentaryfilm #KoernerCamera #canonc300mk2 @dubblebee @portland @marcus.pdx @adventuresofhektor @mandellexperiences @lostnportland @freehandfab @coolgage @linneasbg Music: @boogienite "ONE NATION"

"The business as usual structure, the top-down, patriarchal mindset is what got us into this mess. We can't call ourselves the most livable city on earth, until we have a city that works for everyone." Thank you Sarah Iannarone for your very forward thinking interview!! #Portlandinc #Portland #documentaryfilm #canonc300mk2 #ompamember

@lostnportland talking about his first experience when he moved to Portland. Many Portlanders share Chris's notion of arrival. As we grow and come to understand that livability is what draws us here, will livability also be the thing that tears us apart? #TBT April 2014 when we interviewed #BingSheldon founder of #seraarchitects and President of the #portland planning commission in the 70's. This initial 1/2 hour interview turned into 3 hours as the camera kept rolling and we kept listening to the stories from this renegade representative of the Downtown Plan. What started as a cute reflective series then has transformed into a feature length social impact film about Portland and its current state. Today, City Hall will hear testimony regarding the 2035 plan. Is the recommended plan good enough for Portland? #portlandfilm #socialimpact #downtownplan #portlandinc #support #livability #portlandoregon #cityhall #portlandcityhall #seattle #sanfransisco #detroit #chicago #newyork #neworleans #philadelphia #boston

Here's a clip from last weeks interview with Gil Kelley, The Director of the Citywide Planning for San Francisco. "San Franciscans are asking out loud, 'are we losing our soul?' and in many cases, they're asking 'have we lost our soul?' We don't want that to occur in Portland. This is a critical moment to get back ahead of this wave that's coming." Portland inc., at the very least, will showcase how we can all work together as a city during a time that calls for reinvention. Thank you Gil for spending so much time with us during your interview. Beautiful interview with Katsu of @compoundgallery and @kirikomade in Portland today. "If you want to be in the art scene, especially in owning a gallery, you have to work much harder than in any other business that you would do. Art is the last thing people purchase. You have to understand that part of it. If you can survive in the art scene, you can survive in anything." #Portlandinc #Portland #documentaryfilm #KoernerCamera #canonc300mk2

Tim Williams, Executive Director of the Oregon Governors Office of Film and Television, talks about the power of documentary film. We interviewed Tim about the growing film and media industry in Oregon as a whole. "There is a very vibrant, very collaborative community that's happening here on many, many different levels...suddenly we have a very large storytelling palate: Large network tv shows like Grimm being at one end of the scale, as well as creative advertising and production advertising, as well as series and feature film animation, short form animation, interactive games, virtual reality, education and training--coupled in with that, the programming at the local theaters and how all if it interconnects with each other and the crossing over of talent. It's growing every day." #oregonfilm #documentaryfilm #Portland #portlandnw #urbandesign #Portlandinc #canonc300mk2 #KoernerCamera

Chris & Amy are everything Portland could hope for in a pair of activists. "The best thing you can do for your city is to show up. Go to city hall, write letters, know your neighbors and leaders; participate in your community. It breaks my heart to see a disconnect happening." #portlandinc #oregonfilm #portlandnw #Portland #documentaryfilm @amysuea 🎥

Bill Scott served as the Mayors Chief of Staff in the early 70's. He was 28 and full of high concept ideas that contributed to the city we love today. He engineered the City Club report on Urban Renewal in the 60's, which helped analyze our cities needs during its development. #Portland #Downtownplan #Portlandinc #documentaryfilm #canonc300mk2 #KoernerCamera
